What to actually expect at our beginner adult dance classes

A no-frills guide for anyone wondering if they’re “good enough” to dance with us.

Skill level

We run two beginner adult dance class types:

  • Absolute Beginner (Tuesdays & Thursdays): No dance experience? Two left feet? Mild dread? This is where you start.
  • Regular Beginner (Mondays): You’ve done a few dance classes, can remember a few steps, and you’re ready to slowly level up without pressure.

Not super fit? No problems. You can dial down the intensity of your enthusiasm to suit your energy level for that week.

Accessibility

Dance is inherently very physical, especially at beginner levels, which will focus on jumping and big moves, rather than restrained and intricate choreography. This means people with serious knee and back injuries should consider whether this is physically safe for them.

If you have any disabilities or minor injuries but can still move safely in your body, let your teacher know before class so they can offer modifications.

What to Wear

Whatever you can move in. We recommend trackies, basketball shorts, oversized tees and sneakers. We discourage sandals, slides, heels, and bare feet for safety reasons.

Who is in the room?

All genders, all ages (we’ve had 18 to 60+), all body types. You’ll see solo dancers, friendship duos, creative industry folks, burnt-out office workers, fresh migrants, lifelong locals, and people who never thought they’d dare set foot in a dance class. We don’t do cliques. We’re not cool enough to know how.

What We Dance To

We learn from a mixed bag of street dance foundations. Think hip hop, house, waacking, and Afro-Caribbean styles. Just know you’ll be taught by dancers who’ve trained in and respected the cultural roots of each genre.

How It Works

  • Every class runs for 1 hour
  • You’ll get a warm-up, some foundational groove techniques, then a short combo (mini choreo), and a big sweaty dance-out to finish
  • You don’t need to remember anything from week to week. There are no performances and no pressure to get it right

Pricing

  • $22 single pass
  • Multi-class passes available for savings
  • Pay-scale spots available for folks doing it tough: just email us at hello@groovetherapy101.com to get the convo started.

Where

  • Newtown Erskineville Anglican Church, Newtown (Mondays & Thursdays)
  • The Red Rattler, Marrickville (Tuesdays)

The best way to know if we’re a fit? Come to one class and see if it’s your vibe.
